REBONE.
A comprehensive, multidisciplinary solution for improved, personalised bioactive glass and ceramic bone-substitute implants
Agreement number: 101119884
Project goal.
ReBone is a four-year doctoral network funded under the Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie programme (MSCA-DN). It trains a new generation of researchers in an innovative way, leading to a multidisciplinary, optimal solution that delivers personalised bone-substitute implant technology based on bioactive ceramics, addressing the health and social problems associated with bone trauma and disease. The scientific objective is to build a platform of computational tools enabling clinical experts to manufacture custom bone-graft substitutes for the treatment of critical-size bone defects. This innovation will make it possible to find the ideal therapeutic solution tailored to the patient's needs in terms of: i) mechanical and mechanobiological performance, ii) surgical implantability, and iii) reliability of the manufacturing process.

The musculoskeletal system is highly susceptible to ageing and traumatic events, and common clinical conditions often place a heavy burden on the healthcare system. For patients requiring bone-substitute implants to treat critical-size bone defects, new solutions are needed to meet important unmet needs: personalised solutions delivering better clinical outcomes; material improvements providing higher mechanical reliability without compromising bioactive and bioresorbable properties; and optimised manufacturing technologies for materials and products of high reliability and quality.
Within the project, the company will carry out research into the use of mixed reality for planning surgical procedures involving irregularly shaped bone grafts.

The project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Grant Agreement No 101119884.
