Szpital na Klinach starts to use mixed reality

Szpital na Klinach in Kraków started a cooperation with MedApp and will become the first hospital in Lesser Poland to use mixed reality in preparation of cervical and endometrial cancers surgeries.

This system – CarnaLife Holo enables the surgeon to see virtual images of reproductive organs and tissues together with a view of a real patient’s body, providing for a possibility to interact with these images during the medical procedure.

– The system, basing on medical imaging data, enables the creation of a hologram reflecting the real structure of an anatomical area. For a better preparation of a surgeon to the procedure, the so-called ‘mixed reality’ is used – explains Marek Wypych from MedApp. – Based on the CT, MRI, ultrasonography and other modalities available at DICOM imaging standard, a virtual three-dimensional image of a patient is created – he adds.

– We get patients with cancers, after another procedure, for example after a C-section or colonic surgery. In these situations the surgery becomes more complex, as we have to deal with adhesions, scars and the access to the area under procedure may be more difficult. Thanks to CarnaLife Holo, a physician may see various details in a holographic image even before the procedure was started. The physician may also prepare and plan the procedure to avoid urgent decision during the surgery – says Joanna Szyman, the CEO of Szpital na Klinach. This method is particularly beneficial for patients who have undergone another procedure before, for patients with obesity or after radiotherapy – she adds.

CarnaLife Holo is also helpful during endometrial cancer surgeries, which very often attacks obese women in which the surgery is more difficult and who are prone to higher risk of complications.

Szpital na Klinach has the following departments: gynaecology, obstetrics, general surgery, oncological surgery, vascular surgery, spinal surgery, plastic surgery, orthopaedics, urology and 17 specialist outpatient clinics, including urogynecological, paediatric, endocrine or psychological clinics.

The hospital has two operating theatres, one-day operating theatre and a delivery suite. It performs procedures with a support of the da Vinci Surgical System.

The hospital is located on ul. Kostrzewskiego 37, while specialist clinics can be found on ul. Cechowa 12.

The facility belongs to Neo Hospital sp. z o.o. spółka komandytowa.
